Mr Hogg, a former boarder at Waitaki Boys’ High School set up the scholarship in 1993, which currently pays for up to five students from both schools. Mr Hogg attended Waitaki Boys’ High School 1949-1952, after attending Kurow District High School in the third and fourth forms. At Waitaki he was an all-round student, achieving at high levels academically, in sport and in leadership. He captained the school’s rugby First XV in 1952.

Mr Hogg’s attendance at Waitaki was made possible by the support of others in the Upper Waitaki Valley, and he wished to establish a number of scholarships for students from his original area to receive similar support. In addition, Mr Hogg wanted to give students from rural areas the opportunity and experiences boarding schools could provide. After attending Waitaki Boys’ Mr Hogg graduated from Otago University with a Master’s degree in Engineering and he went on attend Harvard University before embarking on a highly successful business career in worldwide mining which saw him eventually became North American President of Atlas Copco. Mr Hogg passed away in 2009.

Ideally the scholarship is aimed at students whose family circumstances would not normally have allowed them to attend Waitaki as a boarder. The value of the Scholarship is $1,500 per year, (paid at the end of the school year) for each full year the student boards at WBHS or WGHS.

The Provisions of this Scholarship are as follows:
