Holiday Sports Results
Below is a summation of boys results during sports they competed in during the holidays.
CROQUET:
Due to their performances at the New Zealand Secondary School Golf Croquet Championship in Christchurch during winter tournament week, Sen Macmaster and Harry Wilson have been nominated as recipients of a 2019 Croquet NZ Start-up Scholarship.
Harry & Sen are both only year 11 students at Waitaki Boys'. They performed incredibly well in their first national championship against many older teams coming an impressive 10th out of the 24 teams competing.
CNZ Start-up Scholarships are offered to (up to) six entry level U21 players each season that have been identified with skills and potential to progress to a NZ Youth Squad selection in future seasons.
As a recipient of a Start-up Scholarship they have lots of awesome opportunities available and they will also have direct access to the NZ Coach (Greg Bryant) for communications about any aspect of their game and their development as a player.
Congratulations boys - such brilliant news.
SOUTH ISLAND CANOE SPRINT CHAMPS:
Samuel Petrie did well at the South Island Champs over the first weekend with the following awesome results:
U14 200m = 6th,
U14 500m = 4th.
U14 Men K1 5km = 4th
Novice Mixed relay = 2nd
Interschools/Club relay = 8th
Buddy relay = 4th
Well done Samuel, that is a very busy weekend with some pretty impressive results for your first competitive kayaking event.
TRAPSHOOTING: Well done to all our boys who competed at the New Zealand Secondary School Clay Target Champs in Hamilton over the first few days of the holidays.
A couple of outstanding results from our boys were:
NZ Single Rise: Jeremy Paisley (only year 9) was placed 10th in NZ with a score of 25. The top 10 had all scored 25 so the final results were then decided by a shoot off (as soon as you miss a target during the shoot off you are out).
Fish & Game Regional Teams Challenge: Josef Sullivan was selected for the 5 person Central South Island team and they were placed 3rd with a score of 214. The winning team from the Hawkes Bay scored 222 followed by Otago who also scored 214.
Well done boys - great results.
WESTERN HORSE RIDING: Stuart Beattie did very well representing NZ at the Trans Tasman event in Taupo.
His results include:
1st Ranch Riding
4th Trail,
6th Showmanship,
6th Versatility,
8th Hunter Under Saddle,
10th Hunt Seat Equitation.
Well done Stuart. Awesome results.
The final team results of the Trans Tasman were that the AQHANZ youth team were second overall with a differential score of 39.
ROWING: A big well done to our two boys who competed last weekend (representing the ORC) in the R2K singles regatta at Ruataniwha.
Lochlan Herrick placed 2nd in the A final of the U15 single sculls.Alejo Linares-Fontona placed 8th in the B final of the U19 single sculls.Great work Lochlan and Alejo
NZSS MOUNTAINBIKING CHAMPS:
The New Zealand Secondary Schools Mountainbiking Championships were held in Dunedin over three days in the middle weekend of the holidays. Over 400 students competed representing 110 schools from throughout NZ.
The Enduro events were held on day 1 - Friday.
Luke Hayman was our lone entrant in this event as unfortunately Ryan Smit was injured prior to the champs.
Luke competed in the U17 section against 43 other riders.
After the five stages of the enduro event Luke won a NZ silver medal coming an impressive 2nd =. What makes it even more impressive is that there were only 5 seconds that separated the 1st and 2nd placegetters.
On Saturday the downhill events were on.
46 riders were entered in the U17 section where Luke again flew the WBHS flag. He came an awesome 8th.
Only 13 seconds separated 1st from 8th so it was a very closely contested downhill ride.
Sunday was for the cross country boys.
With the track in fine condition Blain Hamilton (U20), Luke Hayman (U17) & Will Plunket (U16) displayed great personal determination and grit as they competed in the cross country event. Team member Taz Selfe experienced a significant injury in warm up and was unable to compete.
What the proud supporting parents noted was the personal conduct each of the cross country boys displayed: Blain and his never give up attitude saw him gain 4 places over the last 4 rounds (one fine piece of riding in the last 100m taking the inside line) to finish 7th, Luke in his least favoured discipline worked hard to complete all three events (over the 3 days) and Will who battled an injury picked up on the first lap and made the most of the downhills finishing 24th.
Another highlight for Waitaki was when Luke Hayman was placed 3rd overall for the U17 boys. This is based off his results for all three disciplines; Enduro, Downhill & Cross Country. Two medals for Luke from the NZSS Championships. Brilliant.
Well done boys - we are very proud of your efforts.
CRICKET:
Well done to the WBHS 1st XI for taking the win over St Kevin's 1st XI on Thursday at Don Field.
Top Batters - Logan Taylor 22, Sam Keno 19 & Eli Johnson 19.
Top Bowler - Riki Bush 3 for 29.
Awesome work team.
OTAGO CRICKET: a huge congratulations to Mason James who has been selected into the Otago U19 Cricket Squad.
ATHLETICS:
Ben Smith represented North Otago competing at the opening day of senior track and field in Dunedin on Saturday.
Ben Smith came an impressive 3rd in the senior heat and second in his under 18 grade in the 100m in 11.79 seconds. Plus second in the senior 200m race and fastest in his grade in 24.24 seconds.
Awesome work Ben.
