| Reports You will receive a detailed report on your son’s progress in April, which will set targets for your son in each subject for the rest of the year. If your son is falling short of a target he will be placed on Academic Report in that subject until he reaches the level he is capable of, and you will be kept informed of this. Senior end of year reports are issued in October, about five weeks before NCEA external exams. They will give a student guidance on his exam preparation. Junior end of year reports come in December. Parent’s interview nights occur shortly after reports are issued – on May 5 and 10, and October 12 (seniors only). Rubbish Duty For a medium level offence within or outside the classroom – such as incorrect uniform, lateness, or dropping litter - a student will be placed on a week’s Rubbish Duty, to be performed between 1.00 and 1.50 each lunchtime. Failure to perform this has serious consequences (see: Detention). Scholarships The following are often available each year: BILL HOGG SCHOLARSHIP ($2,500 p.a.) For a student from the Upper Waitaki Valley who has demonstrated ‘all-round’ achievement and whose family circumstances would not normally allow him to attend the school. BOARD OF TRUSTEES SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000 p.a.). For a student of proven academic, sporting or cultural ability, with an emphasis on ‘all-round’ achievement. ABCO SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000 p.a.) For a student within the Waitaki District Council area who has an established record of achievement in school-work, sport and other activities, and who would be unable to board without some financial assistance. RUGBY SCHOLARSHIP (a ‘substantial contribution’ towards boarding and school fees.) For a student who combines academic promise and rugby potential. Existing students are ineligible. WAITAKI FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP ($2,000 p.a.) For a student of outstanding academic, sporting or cultural ability. Scholarships are advertised in the newsletter and publicly, late each year. School Entrance and Railway Line The entrance is potentially hazardous, as it used by pedestrians, bikes, cars and trains. To minimize risk, the following rules must be observed at the end of the school day: 1. All cars stop at the Railway Line. 2. Students walk their bikes over the Railway Line. 3. Students do not cycle down the avenue. 4. Pedestrians do not exit through the main gates (where they must cross the bus bay) but via the side gates. 5. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorists stop the moment the bells ring. Parents wishing to collect students are best to arrange a pick-up place within the school grounds. It is not appropriate to park in the avenue or bus bay. SCRANO This is the name for the House Competition. Students compete in sporting, cultural and academic activities. The highlight is the Cultural Evening in Term Three. Smoking It is against school rules to smoke at school, while under school authority or in school uniform. Stationery Shop This opens every interval except Wednesday, to supply all stationery needs at competitive prices. It is operated by the Community Association. Student Council Each class elects two representatives to this body, which makes recommendations to the management about the running of the school. Student Learning Kit Many juniors are chronically disorganized. They lack skills of organization, but, more importantly, their disorganization is symptomatic of a failure to take responsibility for their learning, which leaves them passive rather than active learners. To meet this challenge all junior students will be expected to have, in every class, a Learning Kit, consisting of: Blue Biro Ruler Red Biro Glue Stick 2H Pencil Eraser HB Pencil Dictionary Three coloured Homework Diary pencils/felt pens Highlighter Scientific Calculator This will be check regularly and students without an item can expect to receive a penalty. Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) The whole school reads silently every day from 1.35 to 1.50. All boys require a book (of their choice) for this. Boys without a book are placed on Rubbish Duty. Boys maintain a log of all books read during the year. |
